Obituary of Alice M Zander

Alice Mary Zander, passed away peacefully at home while sleeping on the 8th of May. She was born on the 13th of May 1922 in Germany to extraordinary parents, Emil & Maria Horitz, immigrants who took their toddler on a journey across the ocean through Ellis Island to a new life in Glenview, IL. They welcomed her sister Dorothy (Seery) & brother, the late Robert to the family. Alice was a woman of the times and with high school business classes and a cosmetology degree, she took a great risk (along with her mother’s encouragement) and left steady employment to start her own hair salon. A contractor working across the street took notice and that resulted in meeting the love of her life, the late Raymond Joseph Zander, whom she married. She was a devoted wife, mother, and business partner in Zander Construction Company. Their interests included touring the American West with a camper and kids in tow, horses, gardening, and annual cross-country trips to keep in touch with her sister’s family. She loved to Polka when she could grab a willing (or unwilling) partner & listening to Waltzes and Lawrence Welk. She is survived by her sister, Dorothy Seery (Dottie) and children: Anne, Marie Larson, Ray Jr., Dorothy (Dody), & Anthony (Tony, married to Jean) as well as dear family friend & honorary 3rd son, Dave (Carol) Winandy. She has 5 grandchildren: Kristin Larson (formally Moertl), Kari Ann (David) Dudash, Eileen (David) Surprenant, Will & Kevin Zander, as well as great grandchildren: Madeline & Landon Moertl, Leela Dudash and Molly, Callan, & John Surprenant. She was a dynamic & loving mother, intent on early learning skills. Talents aside she was never happier than being around baby’s and singing German songs to younger members of the family. She will be greatly missed, but never forgotten. In the words of Susan Gale, “Mothers are like glue. Even when you can’t see them, they’re still holding the family together.” Visitation will be held Friday, May 14th from 8:30-9:30 am at Kolssak Funeral Home, 189 S Milwaukee Ave. (2 Blocks South of Dundee Rd), Wheeling. We will then proceed to St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Buffalo Grove for a 10 am Mass. Interment to follow at All Saints Catholic Cemetery, Des Plaines, IL.
